I am pleased to share that we have made progress on the widening of Steeles Ave East. We are moving forward with something we advocated for decades, and I can proudly say that we are a step closer to seeing it completed.
The Steeles Avenue East Widening is a project in which 1.5km of Steeles Avenue East between Tapscott Road and Ninth Line (Donald Cousens Parkway) will be re-designed into a six-lane urban street with sidewalks, protected bike lanes, new stormwater management facilities, and two bridge crossings at Morningside River and Rouge River.
The Steeles Avenue East Widening is part of the City of Toronto’s commitment to advancing the design of new and improved transportation infrastructure to enhance the transportation, safety and economic growth of the area.
The project began in 2013 after the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks approved an environmental assessment (EA) study that was conducted by the Regional Municipality of York. The EA identified several opportunities for improving local transportation infrastructure, including the recommendation to reconstruct Steeles Avenue East by widening a segment of it from two to six lanes of traffic.
In 2016, the City started the re-design of Steeles Avenue East and hosted a public open house for residents to learn more about the project. The Steeles Avenue East Widening construction is set to begin in 2027.
