Toronto City Council has unanimously approved Councillor Neethan Shan’s motion to explore partnerships for a new Filipino Community Centre in Toronto, marking an important milestone for one of the city’s largest and fastest-growing communities.

The motion directs City staff to work alongside Filipino community representatives and CreateTO to explore potential partnership models and consider possible locations, including Scarborough, for a future ethnocultural community centre. It also recognizes the longstanding work of grassroots Filipino organizations that have been advocating for dedicated community space for years.

While this is the first step in the process, the unanimous vote reflects City Council’s commitment to working with the Filipino community to create a permanent space for gathering, cultural celebration, services, and intergenerational connection.

The motion passed unanimously on July 30, 2026.
