Make Transit Affordable for Toronto Seniors: Petition to Toronto City Council and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)
WHEREAS seniors across Toronto are facing rising living costs, including increases in housing, food, utilities, and healthcare expenses;
WHEREAS affordable and accessible public transit is essential for seniors to attend medical appointments, access community programs, volunteer, visit family and friends, and remain active and connected members of society;
WHEREAS social isolation is a growing concern among older adults, and accessible transportation plays a critical role in supporting seniors’ mental health, independence, and quality of life;
WHEREAS many seniors live on fixed incomes and are forced to make difficult choices between essential needs and transportation costs;
WHEREAS the City of Mississauga allows seniors aged 65 and older to ride MiWay transit services free of charge when using a PRESTO card registered with the senior fare type;
WHEREAS Toronto should be a leader in creating age-friendly communities and supporting seniors to age with dignity, independence, and full participation in community life;

Why This Matters
Toronto’s seniors built our city and continue to contribute through volunteering, caregiving, community leadership, and supporting local businesses. No senior should have to stay home because they cannot afford a transit fare.
Mississauga has already demonstrated that free transit for seniors is achievable by allowing residents aged 65 and older to ride MiWay free with a senior PRESTO card. Toronto should follow this example and make public transit more equitable and accessible for older adults.
